What is ZEUS ?

ZEUS is a Supportive Autonomous Vehicle for AGriculturE (SAVAGE) and corresponds to the development of a low cost fully autonomous vehicle designed to perform specific tasks within the limits of a field. ZEUS is being based on a robust mechanical platform and an efficient intelligence unit combined in such way to allow rapid comprisal of peripheral units (sensors and actuators). The project's main objective is the implementation of a mass use, low cost and highly flexible robotic platform specially designed to accomplish a variety of trivial agricultural cares and tasks such as weed detection, humidity measurements e.t.c. ZEUS delivers the action of the agricultural care within the limits of each plant independently, in conjunction with the current trends of Precision Farming and Phytotechnology.

The mechanical construction of ZEUS is based on a modular design, formed in such way to allow its implementation with use of local blacksmith technology. With respect to light weight and accuracy of the joints. The body of the robot is shaped by a steel bed supported by four identical legs. Each leg hosts two direct current motors, which provide independent wheel steering and rotation. Additionally, each leg hosts its electromechanical and electronic modules required for the control of the leg unit. All the high level intelligence and power supply units are hosted on the main part of the construction.

The intelligence module of the robot is the main control unit based on a PC/104 and the critical sensoring modules which provide basic navigation abilities (GPS, Compass), in the basic configuration the legs and the supporting circuitry are included and also the power supply units. Future developments will be the incorporation of efficient interactive behavior in a dynamically changing environment with the exhibition of different sensoring units and sensor fusion techniques.

To conclude the goal of this project is the development of a robust general use three - degrees of freedom platform based on open architecture, able to hospitalize different sub-systems in order to perform several tasks in a field during the first 60% of the crop growth period. The system should be able to carry a maximum additional payload of 40kg without serious withdrawal in performance. This guarantees that it will be able to accommodate additional equipment necessary for the various agricultural tasks. Energy consumption will be a priority however furthermore research should be carried out in order to increase the independence of the solution.

SAVAGE is the acronym of the words Supportive Autonomous Vehicle for AGriculturE. SAVAGE is the codename of the project when was started at year 2006.
